No. 23 Adopt a pet

February 21 2019

Irvine, CA

In December Tim told me that a co-worker of his had a St Bernard they weren’t going to be able to keep anymore (reasons why, I’d find out later). So after a couple of months of other people getting to decide if they wanted her, I had pretty much given up on getting her.

Then on February 3rd I got the news that Brandy was officially mine if I wanted her. We called the kennel she was staying at to set up a time to meet her and take her for a quick walk, and just a short couple of days later (busy season otherwise I would have gone that same day) on February 7th I finally met MY dog.

We let her previous owner know that we wanted her, and just like that I had a dog. I felt terrible because working busy season hours and I couldn’t take her home with me just yet, she’d be alone in a new place and I would have felt so bad. So I visited her a couple more times in busy season to take a walk around the block/ get her more familiar with me. Then on February 21st I went to get my dog, Brandy.

Those first couple of days/weeks with her had so many ups and downs. From her looking me in the eyes while she decided to pee on the living room carpet, to her sitting perfectly on my feet/in my lap. I quickly learned how powerful she was and realized she goes psycho when she see other dogs she wants to play with. I had to try many different harnesses and collars /leash options until I found something that would allow my to feel confident/in control of her on a walk. (Gentle leaders for the win). Quickly learned that she was a big cuddle bug and was not shy or quiet about her snoring. She is a rambunctious and goofy dog and that was ultimately the reason she couldn’t stay with her previous owner, but I quickly grew to love her welcome home jumps and her zoomies.

Brandy LOVES taking naps, mostly on her cooling pad or in the tile bathroom. She is obsessed with chicken and cheese and will convince you with her sad moppy face that she’s STARVING if you happen to be eating either in front of her. She loves to chase her tail and is often VERY successful at catching it.

She might be 134 pounds but she’ll convince you that she fits perfectly in your lap. She likes the dog park, but is a big scaredy cat when other dogs want to come say hello. Of all the things on my list, she is one that continues daily to have the biggest impact on my life.
